Number of CT uninsured falling

New data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that the number of people in Connecticut without health insurance is falling.

The data shows that 293,000 people in the state — 8.4 percent of the total population —were uninsured in 2011 and 2012. That’s down from 392,000, or 11.2 percent, from the 2009-2010 period, according to an analysis of the data by the nonprofit Connecticut Voices for Children.

CT Voices attributed the improvement to state and federal policy reforms aimed at improving health care access.

Further analysis of the data shows that 9.5 percent of the state’s under-65 population was uninsured in the recent two-year period, down from 12.7 percent. Meanwhile, the ratio of uninsured residents under age 18 dropped from 6.5 percent to 4.5 percent.
