NU stock hits yearly high

The stock of Hartford utility parent Northeast Utilities hit $34.16 late Monday morning, a 52-week high for the company coming off a strong earnings report last week.

The previous 52-week high for the company was $34.01. NU is the parent company for four electric and natural gas utilities in Connecticut, New Hampshire and Western Massachusetts, including Connecticut Light & Power and Yankee Gas.

On Thursday, NU announced its fourth quarter earnings were up 53 percent over 2009, and its 2010 annual earnings increased 18 percent.

The company will merge with Boston-based NStar by the third quarter, creating new Northeast Utilities made up of four electric and two natural gas utilities in New England.
