NU signs three-year marathon sponsorship

Organizers of the Hartford Marathon unveiled Northeast Utilities Wednesday morning as the race’s title sponsor for the next three years.

The utility will sponsor both the 26.2-mile race and a related half-marathon event, both slated for Oct. 11. The race this year will include a solar power installation in Bushnell Park to provide power, as well as special accommodations for runners who are military members and veterans.

“We’re so proud to combine the energy of Northeast Utilities with the power of thousands of runners to support the greater Hartford area,” Tom May, NU’s chairman, president and CEO, said in a statement.

NU replaces ING U.S. (now Voya Financial), which spent six years as title sponsor.

A study commissioned by marathon organizers determined that the event created $14.1 million in economic value last year, up from $11.2 million in 2012.
