NU signs $5.4M deal for transformer sensors

Looking for an earlier heads up about the state of its transformers and power cables, Northeast Utilities said it will pay a Toronto company $5.4 million for sensors that can detect partial discharges of electricity.

Micromem Technologies will provide the NU with its sensors based on microelectromechanical systems, which will give the utility previously unavailable data about the status of its infrastructure. The companies said the technology should help reduce outages.
