NU shareholders approve NStar merger

Northeast Utilities shareholders approved a $4. billion merger with Boston-based NStar on Friday.

The Hartford-based energy company needed two-thirds of its176 million outstanding shares cast in favor of the merger, if it were to go forward. NU got 98 percent approval on Friday.

The shareholders vote was one of many approvals needed for the merger to complete. Several state and federal regulatory approvals are outstanding. The final approval on the transaction isn’t anticipated until late summer.
