NU Set To Move Downtown

After some fits and starts, Northeast Utilities has scheduled the Aug. 14 weekend to move its Berlin heaquarters to 56 Prospect St. in downtown Hartford.

Chairman Charles Shivery and about 180 more managers and support staff will occupy The Phoenix Cos.’ former 93,000-square-foot office building in the shadow of the Connecticut Science Center. NU paid Phoenix $8.7 million for the building last December.

The parent of Connecticut Light & Power and Yankee Gas System scrapped plans for a two-phase move, starting in June and ending in August, and opted to relocate everyone at once, said NU spokesman Philip Vece.

Greene Facility Services of Manchester will oversee the move of furniture and equipment, beginning on Friday, Aug. 14 and continuing through the weekend to be ready when employees report to work Monday morning, Vece said. (Gregory Seay)

Fidelco Remains Mum

More than six weeks after the departure of the public face of Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, the Bloomfield nonprofit is still tight-lipped about George J. Salpietro’s abrupt exit on June 20 and is not actively searching for a replacement.

Salpietro, 55, whose sudden blindness 15 years ago united him with Fidelco, had spent the past decade as executive director of the organization founded by Bloomfield industrialist Charlie Kaman.

Neither side has fully explained why Salpietro left. In an interview days after his departure, Salpietro, of Colchester, said declining health was a factor. But he also hinted at other extenuating circumstances involved in his exit.

Fidelco spokesman Jack Hayward said last week the organization wouldn’t comment beyond its effusive praise for Salpietro’s leadership during his tenure.

Meantime, Fidelco’s day-to-day operations are being overseen by two board members — Vice Chairman Eliot D. Russman and Parker D. Roberts, Hayward said.

Hayward said Fidelco will eventually land a successor, but he offered no timetable. (Gregory Seay)
