Northeast Utilities is developing an alternative route for its Northern Pass transmission line in New Hampshire, expecting to unveil the map by the end of the month, according to regulatory filings.
Northern Pass is a $1.2 billion transmission line through New Hampshire connecting to power generated by large-scale hydro dams in Quebec, Canada. The venture has encountered strong resistance from New Hampshire residents and legislators, who don’t want the above-ground line through the scenic landscape.
To avoid some of those issues, NU has worked on a new route through another area of the state, where its electric subsidiary Public Service of New Hampshire does not own any rights-of-way.
NU plans to file the new route with the U.S. Department of Energy by the end of March and complete the transmission line in early 2017, according to its annual report filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
Northern Pass spokesman Michael Skelton said the company still is finalizing the new proposal and will share those details soon.
