NU completes $718M transmission project

Two Northeast Utilities electric subsidiaries have completed the $718 million Greater Springfield Reliability Project transmission line both on-time and under budget.

Connecticut Light & Power and Western Massachusetts Electric upgraded 39 miles of transmission lines between Bloomfield, Conn. and Ludlow, Mass. with more than 600 new structures, 13 new or rebuilt substations and switching stations.

The original project cost was estimated at $718 million, but the utilities completed the project more than $40 million under budget. The timeline called for the line to be energized by the end of the year.

The project is part of NU’s larger New England East-West Solutions transmission program, projected to move electricity more freely around southern New England. The three other NEEWS projects are designed for eastern Connecticut and Rhode Island; central Connecticut; and northern Rhode Island and central Massachusetts.

NU is partnering with National Grid on portions of the project.
