Volunteers from power generator NRG Energy Inc., with four major facilities in Connecticut, finished installing a 52 kilowatt solar array on a Haitian children’s home.
NRG donated parts and volunteer labor to the project at the Zanmi Beni Home for Children in Port-au-Prince that provides long-term care for 64 children displaced by the 2010 earthquake.
The array will use batteries to store electricity for when Haiti’s unreliable grid power is unavailable. The solar power will be used for lights, computers, appliances, and fans.
The children in the home range from 2 to 21 years old, and a 185-person staff takes care of them. Some of the children are without parents and have disabilities.
NRG is working to put more solar arrays in Haiti, including at a fish farm, an agricultural farm and 20 schools.
