NRC to decide if CT nuke needs more oversight

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission will decide if the nuclear Millstone Power Station in Waterford needs additional federal oversight after a February failure led a nuclear reactor to produce more power.

NRC inspected the event on Feb. 2 that led to one of Millstone’s two nuclear reactors to increase its output by 8 percent. The inspection found that the reactor personnel failed to carry out their assigned roles and responsibilities, and they provided poor power-level management during control-valve testing.

At 1 p.m. Thursday at its regional offices in King of Prussa, Pa., NRC will hold a regulatory conference to discuss the inspection findings, their significance and if additional oversight is needed at Millstone, which is owned and operated by Dominion.

No enforcement action is expected at the regulatory conference, as those conclusions will be reached at a later date.
