Preston residents are voting today on the future of the former Norwich Hospital site which has been of interest to several developers.
Polls were opened 6 a.m. in town hall for voting on a referendum on whether to buy the former state mental hospital property or allow the state to regain control of the 419-acre site.
The Norwich Hospital Advisory Committee unanimously recommended buying the land off the Thames River, minus the ash landfill, which is about 30 acres.
If voters approve the purchase the town would have to close the deal by Friday.
The site has been vacant since the hospital closed in 1996. Town leaders are considering forming an economic development commission to market the property if the purchase is approved. (AP)
