Norway orders six Sikorsky Seahawks in $1.13B deal

The Norwegian government has decided to purchase six new MH-60R Seahawks from Stratford-based manufacturer Sikorsky in a $1.13 billion deal.

This will strengthen the Armed Forces’ control in the northern regions, said Norway Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram. Delivery is expected to begin as early as 2025.

The new maritime helicopters will be replacing the NH90 helicopters, which Norway retired last June.

“In the current security situation, we have put a lot of effort into getting a quick solution to our helicopter situation. The Seahawk is the same type of helicopter used by close allies, and is based on proven technology,” Gram said.

Gram said in an announcement that the Seahawks will originally be used by the Coast Guard, as the helicopters will give them the ability to ensure national control, exercise authority and perform search and rescue at sea.

Norway will be sending Air Force personnel to Denmark to gain expertise on operations of the Seahawks. Denmark has been operating the helicopters since 2016.

“Through this concrete example of Nordic defense cooperation, we gain experience from Denmark before receiving the Seahawks in Norway. This will assist us in gaining full operational capability quicker,” said Gram.

The MH-60R Seahawks will be stationed at Bardufoss. After an agreement is signed with the U.S. this summer, delivery of the aircraft will begin in the summer of 2025 through 2027.
