Norwalk man gets 54 months for embezzling

The former controller for a Stamford market research firm must serve 54 months behind bars for embezzling at least $1.2 million from his employer, authorities say.

New Haven federal judge Janet B. Hall also sentenced Thomas J. Turey, 64, of Norwalk, to three years of supervised release on Tuesday, the Connecticut U.S. Attorney’s office said.

According to investigators, Turey was controller at Rothstein-Tauber Inc. from 1995 until January, overseeing the firm’s financial records, including its general ledger and bank reconciliations, authorities said.

However, investigators claim that between 2010 and 2012 Turey wrote some 100 checks totaling about $1.2 million to himself from his employer’s principal operating account and deposited the checks into his personal bank account.

The majority of the embezzled funds were subsequently transferred into Turey’s online brokerage account, they said.

He was ordered to make full restitution, prosecutors said.
