Northeast Utilities gives $625K for heating assistance

Hartford energy provider Northeast Utilities donated $625,000 this morning to Operation Fuel to provide energy assistance to families and senior citizens who live in communities served by Connecticut Light & Power and Yankee Gas.

Operation Fuel is a private statewide program providing emergency energy assistance to lower income households in financial crisis by not eligible for energy assistance from government-funded programs. Despite the name, Operation Fuel provides assistance for more than just home heating oil, giving money toward any of a home’s energy costs.

The result of the Northeast Utilities donation will be an addition 2,000 families receiving assistance from Operation Fuel. CL&P and Yankee Gas – both of which are owned by Northeast Utilities – have given financial support to Operation Fuel since the non-profit’s founding in 1977.

“As we see signs that the general economy is beginning to improve, the stark reality is that many in our communities continue to need our help and assistance,” said Rod Powell, Yankee Gas president and COO, in a statement. “We hope our contribution encourages other Connecticut businesses to support energy assistance programs as well.”
