Northeast job openings down in July

There were fewer job openings in the Northeastern United States in July than there were a year ago, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said today.

In the Northeast, companies reported 611,000 open positions, down from 640,000 in July 2012 and 658,000 in June.

Companies in the region — one of four the BLS tracks — reported 678,000 hires, up from 669,000 a year ago. Meanwhile, 308,000 people quit their job during the month, up from 298,000 in June and 295,000 in July last year.
