Connecticut has allocated a $2.2 million grant for mapping the topography and elevation of the entire state — data that will eventually be available to the public, authorities say.
The state Office of Policy & Management (OPM) says the grant recipient is the Capitol Region Council of Governments (CRCOG), which is administering the project.
According to OPM, CRCOG has hired The Sanborn Map Co. Inc., of Colorado Springs, Colo., to obtain the high-resolution aerial imagery and precise elevation data for all 169 cities and towns. Centralizing the mapping project will save millions, rather than communities individually contracting for the mapping service, officials said.
Scheduled to be available this spring, the data, said CRCOG Executive Director Lyle Wray, can be used locally by engineers, planners, assessors and first responders. The elevation data also can be used to create 3D models of the earth's surface.
Eventually, the data also will be available to utilities, businesses and entrepreneurs, nonprofits and academia, in accordance with the state's Open Data initiative.
The data will be hosted for public consumption on CT ECO (cteco.uconn.edu), a joint service of the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and UConn's Center for Land Use Education and Research.
The mapping project, which includes funding support from the state departments of Transportation and Emergency Services and Public Protection, is being done in collaboration with the U.S. Geological Survey and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
