The Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation awarded the American School for the Deaf $50,000 in support of the school’s “Healthy Kids Initiative.” The health and wellness program will run during the school day and after-school and will be offered to all ASD students. ASD’s Healthy Kids Initiative is an interactive program where students will learn about balanced diets and the importance of exercise in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Wells Fargo‘s contributions to Connecticut nonprofits totaled $1.7 million in 2013, an increase from the $1.1 million given in 2012. There were 307 grants presented to support nonprofits focused on areas such as affordable housing, community development, health and human services, education and many others. Wells Fargo team members contributed 6,980 volunteer hours to help their neighborhoods and communities.

Subaru of America presented a check for nearly $14,000 to Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, a Bloomfield nonprofit. The money was raised during Subaru of America’s sixth annual “Share The Love” campaign in support of Fidelco’s mission to breed, train and place its German Shepherd guide dogs for men and women who are blind.

Berkshire Bank and its two charitable foundations contributed $196,599 to local United Way organizations as part of its 2014 workplace campaign. The money raised includes corporate donations from the two foundations of $77,500, employee contributions of $85,390 and matching donations of $33,709. Berkshire Bank has 92 full-service branch locations throughout Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut and Vermont.

The Community Foundation of Greater New Britain has approved a $250,000 grant to the New Britain Museum of American Art, one of the final pieces of the museum’s ongoing capital campaign for a 17,364-square-foot expansion scheduled to break ground this spring. The $10.2 million expansion is part of the Lexington Street museum’s $21.2 million capital campaign that will not only fund the additional space, but will also allow for the purchase of contiguous property, construction of 80 additional parking spaces and endowment growth.

The Union Savings Bank Foundation awarded a $7,848 grant to The Arc of Litchfield County of Torrington (LARC). The funds were used to purchase two ceiling lift systems for the newly renovated handicapped accessible restrooms at LARC’s Torrington facility. n
