The Hospital of Central Connecticut‘s Women’s Heart Wellness Center recently received $15,250 as beneficiary of the first annual Running with Scissors 5K in East Hampton. The run, which attracted about 200 participants, was founded in honor of Karen Pfaffenbach, who lost her life to heart disease last April. Funds for the center will primarily support community outreach and education for women’s heart disease prevention and management.

More than $790,000 in grants have been awarded by the Hartford Foundation to support 2014 summer education and recreation programs for school-age youth in Greater Hartford. Over 16,000 children are expected to participate in programs this summer. The Hartford Foundation is the community foundation for Hartford and 28 surrounding communities.

The Hartford Symphony Orchestra was selected as one of 886 nonprofits nationwide to receive a NEA Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The nonprofit musical company was recommended for a $10,000 grant to support its Musicians Care Project, an initiative to enhance the quality of life for people whose healthcare needs prevent them from taking part in traditional music performances by providing live, interactive musical experiences.Â

The Grainger Foundation has donated $40,000 to SkillsUSA Connecticut in support of its mission to help student members become world-class workers and responsible citizens. The grant will be used to reduce expenses associated with sending 100 students and teachers from 13 Connecticut technical high schools to the national competition in Kansas City, Mo. SkillsUSA Connecticut is a nonprofit educational association supported by more than 100 industry partners across the state.

St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center has received a $1.5 million grant from the Maximilian E. & Marion O. Hoffman Foundation to benefit the hospital’s Breast Health Center. The Breast Health Center will be named after the Maximilian E. & Marion O. Hoffman Foundation. The Hoffman Foundation, based in West Hartford, is the largest private foundation donor to the hospital and donates to groups that further education, medicine and the arts.

Community Mental Health Affiliates received $25,000 from the Community Foundation of Greater New Britain to support the agency’s child and family services program. The funds will help the program incorporate sensory-based treatment approaches and support the development of a sensory integration room. New Britain’s Community Mental Health Affiliates is a private nonprofit provider of behavioral health and substance abuse treatment.
