No construction work as Labor Day travelers hit the road

State officials say they’ve suspended all construction work on state highways and roads this weekend, which could be one of the heaviest travel periods of the year.

All state-sponsored construction work stopped early Friday morning and won’t resume until 8 p.m. Tuesday, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s office said. Any work done this weekend will be on an emergency basis only, he said.

Earlier this week, AAA said that Labor Day traffic across the country would be the heaviest since 2008, due to low gas prices, a stronger labor market and more disposable income.

AAA projected that 35.5 million Americans would travel 50 miles or more between Sept. 3 and Sept. 7. Of that number, 86 percent are expected to drive.

The average price of a gallon of regular gasoline in Greater Hartford on Friday was $2.54, down from $3.71 a year ago, according to AAA.
