No. 1 golfer Scheffler wins Travelers Championship; tourney raises more than $3.2M for charity

The world’s No. 1 ranked golfer Scottie Scheffler on Sunday won his sixth PGA Tour tournament of 2024, beating out Tom Kim in a playoff hole at the Travelers Championship.

It was Scheffler’s first win at the TPC River Highlands in Cromwell. He shot 22 under par over four rounds, and beat Kim in a one-hole playoff to win the tournament, which was disrupted at one point by climate change protesters who stormed the 18th green before being arrested by law enforcement.

Scheffler won $3.6 million for being tournament champion. A signature event on the PGA Tour, players competed for a $20 million purse at the Travelers Championship.

Meantime, tournament host Travelers Inc. announced that this year’s event raised more than $3.2 million for about 170 nonprofits in the region. This year brings the total amount generated for charities to more than $30 million since Travelers became title sponsor in 2007.

“We watched as history was written this past week, with the world’s best golfers competing in front of the game’s best fans,” said Alan Schnitzer, chairman and CEO at property and casualty insurer Travelers. “Congratulations to our 2024 champion, Scottie Scheffler, on a tremendous performance. This week was marked by highlights all around, from the action on the course to the tens of thousands of fans lining the fairways to the record amount generated for charity, and we cannot wait to do it all again next year.”

The Travelers Championship donates 100% of its net proceeds to local charities. This year’s primary beneficiary is The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, a nonprofit based in Ashford, that serves children with serious illnesses.

The 2025 Travelers Championship is scheduled to take place June 16-22, at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell.
