Newtown gets $30K grant for healing arts center

The federal National Endowment for the Arts awarded Newtown a $30,000 grant for its HealingNewtown Arts Space, authorities say.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, Senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy, Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty and Newtown First Selectman Patricia Llodra announced the grant.

HealingNewtown Arts Space was created in response to last December’s Sandy Hook shooting tragedy to bring the community together to express their grief and heal in a safe and creative environment through a variety of arts events, workshops, exhibitions, performances and concerts.

Now run by volunteers, the organization is hiring staff and searching for permanent arts space and an executive director.
