Newington manufacturer announces layoffs

A German manufacturing company this week notified its employees and the state that it plans to lay off almost 100 employees at its Newington site, according to information submitted to the state Department of Labor (DOL).

Schuco USA, the North American headquarters for Germany-based window, door and facade systems manufacturer Schuco, announced it was downsizing its Newington fabrication unit at 240 Pane Road, leaving only its wholesale division at the site.

According to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice issued to both employees and the state DOL from Schuco USA Human Resource Manager Laura J. Sprague, the downsizing will affect about 95 employees in Newington, with at least 50 full-time employees being laid off.

Sprague told employees that layoffs were expected to begin June 3, and continue through the end of the year. She said the company expects the layoffs to be permanent.

In her notice to the DOL, Sprague said the decision to downsize in Newington came after “several difficult years of business with supply chain interruptions, inflation, geopolitical challenges and the unprecedented disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.”
