Newington lands new training fitness center

A fitness training facility will soon occupy two vacant storefronts in the Stop & Shop plaza on Fenn Road in Newington.

The company, F45 Training, is a “global fitness community specializing in innovative, high-intensity group workouts,” the application said.

Applicant Joseph Bermudez is seeking the special permit to allow “places of physical activity or recreation such as gyms, training facilities, health clubs, and bowling alleys” within the established zoning.

The permit was approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission at its Feb. 8 meeting.

The gym offers 45-minute group classes and individual sessions. Class sizes will range from 21-27 participants, and the facility will have two to four employees per shift. There will be no food service at the facility.

F45 will be open each day at 5 a.m. and until 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, until 4 p.m. on Saturdays and until 11 a.m. on Sundays. Peak hours will be 5-8 a.m. and 5-8 p.m., and members will use the plaza parking lot.

The fitness center would occupy units 28A and 30C of the plaza that also features restaurants and other smaller retailers next to a large Stop & Shop grocery store.

The plaza is located near athletic fields used by Central Connecticut State University, and other retail shops and food establishments, including the new Starbucks down the street.
