New York salt miners trapped

Rescue efforts are underway for 17 miners who are stuck in an elevator below ground at the Cargill Salt Mine located in Lansing, New York, according to Marcia Lynch, public information officer with Tompkins County Department of Emergency Response.

Emergency crews have made contact with the miners via a radio, and they all appear to be uninjured, Jessica Verfuss, assistant director with Tompkins County Department of Emergency Response tells CNN. Crews have provided heat packs and blankets to the miners to keep them warm during the rescue operation.
