New Milford to receive $2.5M for brownfield demolition

The State Bond Commission is expected to award $2.5 million to new Milford to demolish the former Century Brass mill site, according to Gov. Dannel P. Malloy.

By demolishing the mill, New Milford plans to remediate and redevelop the brownfield so a private developer can turn the property into a revenue-generating industrial or commercial use.

The 72-acre property already has undergone a $4.4 million cleanup in sewer, water, and road improvements, but the extra funding is meant to remove the vacant brass mill contaminated with asbestos still on the site.

New Milford bought the property in 1999 after closing it to tax foreclosure in 1986. Once remediated, the town expects to increase its industrial tax base by $300,000 annually from the eventual revenue-generating use on the site.
