New London will certify its hurricane protection system this year, after the storm surge from Tropical Storm Irene caused damage along the Connecticut coast.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency mandates the certification of the system to meet federal flood control requirements.
New London hired Boston-based GEI Consultants, Inc. to map the flood control system and inspect the hurricane barrier including levees, concrete walls and a pumping station.
GEI performs geotechnical, environmental, water and ecological services throughout the Northeast. The company is also monitoring landfill and recycling compliance in New Britain.
