New London task force eyes downtown storefront vacancies

New London has launched a new strategic planning task force to improve the city’s downtown area.

The task force is part of a two-year partnership with Connecticut Main Street Center called Diversity on Main. The initiative, which also includes the Black Business Alliance, aims to address chronic storefront vacancies in downtown and spur economic growth.

Mayor Michael Passero says the task force will develop a comprehensive, actionable strategic plan. The first steps will be to do a community survey, analyze market data and develop a vision statement.

“By bringing together local leaders and residents, we’re building a roadmap that will continue to strengthen New London’s downtown economy and celebrate its unique character for all to enjoy and benefit from,” Passero said.

The Diversity on Main initiative was launched in 2024 with support from the M&T Bank Amplify Fund. It aims to provide viable business and wealth-building opportunities to under-represented and minority-owned businesses to fully participate in the downtown economy.
