New London officials to get drug testing

New London has begun a new program of random drug and alcohol testing for the seven elected City Council members and some other city employees.

The random testing, which will be made by a computer, also includes the four attorneys who work in the law director’s office and about 10 nonunion employees.

The program will include a Breathalyzer test for alcohol and a urine test for drugs such as cocaine and heroin.

Anybody testing positive will be contacted by a substance abuse professional who will determine if treatment or further tests are needed.

The police union says it’s behind the drug testing but the issue is still being negotiated. No action has been taken by the city’s other unions. (AP)

READER RESPONSE:

“This should be across the board in all towns for all employees. Why won’t the unions agree to this safety procedure?” — Ray
