New London magnet school opens in marine trades

More than 100 teens from two dozen eastern Connecticut towns have become the first class enrolled in a new magnet school that prepares students for marine-related fields, The Associated Press reports.

The Marine Science Magnet High School in New London opened Thursday with about 80 freshmen and 24 sophomores. It will eventually have about 250 students when it expands to include junior and senior classes.

It will focus on preparing students for jobs in marine technology, aquaculture and related fields.

Students will also work on programs with professionals at Mystic Aquarium, the University of Connecticut’s Avery Point campus, Mystic Seaport and other locations.
