New London hospital workers strike

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy blasted the administrators of Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London for walking away from the bargaining table, leading to 800 nurses and technicians to go on strike Wednesday.

“To walk out on the last day with more than 9 hours left shows a blatant disregard for their employees and, equally important, the patients they care for,” Malloy said in a released statement. “There is simply too much at stake – both sides need to get back to the table and work out their differences.”

The hospital has put replacement workers in place and patient care quality will be maintained, said Bruce Cummings, president and CEO of Lawrence.

The sticking point between the two sides is the union’s call for 100 percent job security, which the hospital said in a released statement is an unreasonable request in this economic environment.

Any future talks between the two sides will be scheduled through a moderator, Cummings said.
