New London hospital reinstates pediatric surgery

Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London is preparing to reinstate general surgery services for pediatric patients following a six-month moratorium following the departure of three of its six general surgeons, The Day of New London reports.

Dr. Daniel Rissi, the hospital’s vice president and chief medical and clinical operations officer, said the moratorium began in July. During that time, children who needed appendectomies and other surgeries were sent to the pediatric departments at Yale-New Haven, Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford or Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, R.I.

L&M is also working on an expansion of pediatric services with the opening of a pediatric emergency room in conjunction with Yale-New Haven Hospital. The specialty service would be offered on evenings and weekends when pediatricians’ offices are closed.
