New housing permits in CT up 8% from last year

Towns and cities in Connecticut authorized 450 new housing units in October, bringing the total number this year to 4,575.

The data is based on U.S. Census Bureau estimates from the state Department of Economic and Community Development.

In October, Rocky Hill authorized the most units (98), followed by Bethel (54), Granby (33) and Newington (28).

Last year, 4,227 housing units had been authorized in Connecticut at the end of October. This year’s total was 8.2% higher.

The number of housing units authorized per year dipped to below 5,000 in 2020 and below 4,000 in 2021.

There were more housing units authorized in 2022 than in the previous six years. In 2015, municipalities authorized 5,322 permits — the most since 2007, when 6,619 permits were issued.
