The Mohegan Tribe’s Pennsylvania casino said it will reduce its carbon footprint by 14 percent through the installation of a new cogeneration plant.
Construction on the $3 million plant, also known as a combined heat and power system (CHP), will begin in March and operations will begin by fall, Mohegan Sun Pocono said. The state of Pennsylvania is financing one-third of the cost through a grant.
The Mohegans, whose flagship casino is in eastern Connecticut, acquired the former Pocono Downs from Penn National Gaming more than a decade ago.
CHP systems generate electricity using natural gas. The systems capture the waste heat for use in nearby facilities.
Mohegan said its plant is expected to reduce its annual carbon emissions by 3,900 metric tons.
