New Haven’s Black Wall Street Festival planned for Saturday

More than 135 Black-owned businesses and organizations will put their talents and merchandise on display this weekend at the New Haven Black Wall Street Festival.

Now in its second year, the festival is Saturday, Aug. 19, from noon to 8 p.m. on the New Haven Green.

The event, which coincides with Black Business Month, showcases participants’ offerings amid a festive backdrop, including live music and performances. A drill team, drum squad and jump rope team are among the planned entertainers.

For its inaugural year in 2022, the event attracted about 35 Black-owned businesses and artists.

According to organizers, interest has exploded, with the number of participants nearly quadrupling to about 135 vendors.

This year’s event has new activity centers. At the “empowerment tent,” entrepreneurs can learn about and get connected to services and resources to help them start, grow or scale their businesses. There will also be a family tent with activities and giveaways and a yard tent where members of The Divine Nine group of Black fraternities and sororities can connect.

The event, organized by the city’s Department of Arts, Culture and Tourism, is part of New Haven’s efforts to advance inclusive economic growth.
