New Haven woos school-site redevelopers

The city of New Haven is soliciting redevelopment proposals for its surplus Strong School building and grounds in the city’s Fair Haven section.

The Elm City’s Office of Economic Development said the city’s school board declared the 33,000 square-foot school surplus and unneeded.

The city says ideal adaptive reuses for the property will complement the adjacent residential areas on Clinton Avenue and Perkins Street. In addition, the property is situated on Grand Avenue, one of the streets that is part of New Haven’s Main Street Center initiative.

Built in 1915, Strong School is included within the Quinnipiac River Historic District Extension’s boundaries and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
