New Haven region adds 1,500 jobs in February, leading the state

The New Haven area led the state in job growth in February, adding 1,500 new positions, according to the state Department of Labor.

The Bridgeport-Stamford region was close behind with 1,400 new jobs, followed by Norwich-New London with 600 and Danbury with 300. The Hartford area lost 1,500 jobs, while Waterbury’s job numbers remained unchanged.

Overall, Connecticut added 2,600 jobs during the month, led by the private sector, which gained 2,500 positions, the labor department said. Figures are seasonally adjusted.

Construction saw the most growth with 1,500 additional jobs, followed by leisure and hospitality, which gained 1,100.

On the downside, professional and business services took the biggest hit, shedding 1,000 jobs, followed by the manufacturing and information sectors, which each lost 100.

Connecticut’s unemployment rate remained stable at 4.6 percent, down from 4.9 percent a year ago but still higher than the nation’s 4.1 percent, the report said.

The state has now regained more than 82 percent of the jobs lost during the Great Recession of 2008 to 2010, the department said.
