New Haven medtech picks up four new patents for orthopedic-surgery device

New Haven medtech Biorez said it has won four new patents for its BioBrace implant, a tissue scaffold that aims to speed healing in knee and rotator cuff surgeries.

The patents protect the device’s use in surgery into 2040. The device now has 8 U.S. patents and 16 outside of the U.S., the company said.

CEO Kevin Rocco said the patents come during an “exceptional year” that includes securing Food and Drug Administration clearance and winning an ACE (Accelerating the Cutting Edge) award for new technology from the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine.

The device, which Biorez sells primarily to sports medicine surgeons, can be used to reinforce tendon and ligament repairs in knee and shoulder injuries like torn ACLs (anterior cruciate ligament) and rotator cuffs to shore up soft tissue and help with regeneration and healing. It is naturally broken down by the body once soft tissue has regenerated.

Biorez describes the device as the first biocomposite soft tissue scaffold, meaning it contains both synthetic and biologic components. The company kicked off a limited commercial release of the device last summer.
