New Haven gas main break forces evacuations

A section of downtown New Haven was evacuated Wednesday morning after construction workers broke a natural gas pipe, The Associated Press reports.

Police Officer Joe Avery says crews working on a construction project at Gateway Community College on Crown Street broke the pipe while digging shortly after 10 a.m. Wednesday. Properties on Crown, Church and Temple streets were evacuated and several roads were closed.

No injuries are reported.

Avery says the problem was nearly fixed early Wednesday afternoon. He says people have been allowed back into buildings and only Crown Street between Church and Chapel Streets remains closed.

Crews with Southern Connecticut Gas Co. remain at the scene.
