New Haven firm’s new tower breaks ground

A New Haven-based architecture firm’s design for a new hotel and office tower in Maryland is becoming a reality.

Pickard Chilton, which has headquarters on Chapel Street, announced this week that construction has begun on its Avocet Tower in Bethesda, Md. The new 530,000-square-foot building will be at 7373 Wisconsin Ave., in the city’s central business district.

Jon Pickard, principal at Pickard Chilton, said the tower is “one of downtown Bethesda’s most anticipated developments.”

“Its unique mix of hotel and office space will surely distinguish it from other new urban developments,” Pickard said in an announcement.

According to Pickard, there is significant demand for Class A office space in the area. The tower has environmentally friendly features, including electric vehicle charging stations and bio-retention basins. The design includes a 7,500-square-foot sky terrace at the top of the building, and designated space for a fitness center, conference center and restaurant.

The new building is scheduled to open in the summer of 2021.
