New Haven dentist to pay settlement to resolve Medicaid fraud claim

A retired New Haven dentist will pay $252,913 to resolve allegations that he violated the False Claims Act, the state Attorney General’s office and the U.S. Attorney’s office announced Thursday.

The dentist, Robert Sorrentino, was accused of submitting false claims for oral surgery and maxillofacial services to the Medicaid program.

“Robert Sorrentino falsely overcharged the Medicaid program for dental services and procedures he did not perform,” Connecticut Attorney General William Tong said in an announcement.

Tong said his office will vigorously pursue such fraud as a deterrent and to protect taxpayer-funded health-care programs.

Sorrentino is the former principal and operator of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgical Associates, PC, in New Haven. He sold his practice and retired in November 2014.

According to investigators, from 2010 to 2011, Sorrentino billed Medicaid for dental procedures and services he never performed, or which were included in other covered services, including additional periods of sedation, and removal of bone and tissue.

The money will be used to reimburse both federal and state shares of the Medicaid program, with the state to receive 60 percent.
