New Haven debuts handicapped-ready cabs

The city of New Haven and private operator Metro Taxi started the wheels rolling Thursday on the state’s first wheelchair-accessible cab service.

The 24-hour “MetroAcces” service is possible from changes to state law, effective Oct. 1, that previously banned such cabs, officials said.

Metro Taxi says it plans to add three more specially-equipped vans to transport patrons who rely on wheelchairs and motorized scooters.

City and cab officials say theirs is the first handicapped-accessible taxi service in Connecticut.
