New Haven BIZ wins nine statewide journalism awards

New Haven BIZ was recently honored with nine awards for editorial excellence from the Connecticut chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

The chapter recently announced the statewide winners for work published in 2022

The annual awards competition celebrates the best work by Connecticut journalists in print, broadcast and online. New Haven BIZ, a monthly print publication in 2022, competed in the magazine category.

New Haven BIZ garnered first place honors for four stories published in 2022:

NHB Editor Michelle Tuccitto Sullo won first place in the government reporting category for the story, “Transparent wages: How to avoid running afoul of CT’s new salary disclosure law,” published in September 2022.

Tuccitto Sullo’s story, “Minority-owned business support network is growing, but entrepreneurs say more is needed,” published in April 2022, won first place in the diversity coverage category.

Fighting fraud: Making sure your money goes toward your investments,” written by Tuccitto Sullo and published in July 2022, garnered first place in the courts/crime category.

NHB Managing Editor Liese Klein was honored with first place in the business category for her story, “Healthy growth: Athletic Brewing expands to Milford as nonalcoholic beer trend takes off,” published in August 2022.

Two NHB stories published last year were second place winners:

Michelle Tuccitto Sullo’s story, “Chelsea Groton Bank reinvents branches, hosts classes to attract in-person visits, boost business,” published in the May 2022 issue, got second place in the business category.

Liese Klein’s story, “Shifting landscape: New Haven Food Terminal navigates future in changing Long Wharf district,” published in the April 2022 edition, got second place in the in-depth category.

Three NHB stories published last year were third place winners:

Liese Klein’s December 2022 story, “Biohaven sets sights on new ailments after $11.6B Pfizer deal,” got third place in the health category. 

Klein’s story, “Shifting demand: Science Park’s latest evolution — a neighborhood,” printed in July 2022, got third place for local reporting.

Contributing writer Jean Falbo Sosnovich got a third place prize in the feature category for her story, “Fresh off TV debut, pro cleaner Sadie Marshall sees growth opportunity in crime scenes.”
