Bridgeport’s Kolmar Americas Inc. said it has acquired Greenleaf Biofuels’ New Haven biodiesel production plant for an undisclosed sum.
The plant, located next to New Haven Harbor, is relatively young. It began operating in the summer of 2013 and has 30 employees.
Kolmar is a subsidiary of the Swiss petrochemical and petroleum company Kolmar Group. The deal is the company’s first foray into owning biofuel production. Kolmar said it has renamed the plant American GreenFuels LLC.
The 3.5-year-old plant is New England’s largest and is expected to produce 15 million gallons of fuel this year. The plant collects used cooking oil and other waste grease to produce the biodiesel, which can be blended with conventional diesel fuel and heating oil.
“Kolmar has had a strategic relationship with the biodiesel plant for several years, and bringing this facility and its employees into the Kolmar family is a good development for all stakeholders,” Raf Aviner, president of Kolmar Americas, said in a statement.
Aviner said Congress’ recent decision to extend a biodiesel tax credit will bolster business at the plant, though the credit is for blenders (who are downstream customers) rather than producers.
