Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has selected Jorge L. Perez to be the state’s banking commissioner, a state government source confirmed Friday morning.
Perez, who was born in Cuba, is vice president of commercial lending at Liberty Bank in New Haven. He has been with the bank and its predecessor, the Bank of Southern, since 2002, and previously worked for Sovereign.
He is a longtime member of the New Haven Board of Aldermen, of which he is currently president.
Malloy is expected to formally announce Perez’s selection shortly.
Perez succeeds Howard Pitkin, who retired last month after three terms as commissioner and 38 years with the department.
