New Haven architects score Google gig

New Haven-based architecture firm Pickard Chilton will be designing Google’s new office space in Cambridge, Mass.

The developer overseeing the project, Boston Properties, selected the Elm City firm to design a new 16-story, 417,000-square-foot office tower, which will be at 325 Main St. in Cambridge.

Google will be a major tenant at the property and has signed a 15-year lease for 362,000 square feet. This will be additional office space for Google’s growing Cambridge presence. Headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., Google has space currently in Cambridge at 355 Main St.

“This new building will expand Google’s presence there and give them a state-of-the-art facility,” said Pickard Chilton Principal Anthony Markese. “We are really pleased and happy to be part of this project.”

The new development is primarily office space, but it will include about 42,000-square-feet of retail at lower levels. It will replace an existing four-story commercial office and retail building.

Pickard Chilton, which is on Chapel Street in New Haven, expects construction to begin in late 2019, with the new building scheduled for completion in 2022. Company officials declined to comment on the project’s cost.

Markese called the project a “next-generation work environment where future tenants, such as Google, can grow their businesses.”

Markese said he expects Pickard Chilton’s design will enhance Cambridge’s Kendall Square, as the project will feature retail, new pedestrian connections and a multi-level public terrace.

The building will have a glass façade and feature unique design elements such as a parallelogram shape and outdoor terraces.

“Part of what makes the building special is that it will link to two other buildings which Boston Properties owns,” Markese said. “It will have much more connectivity between the pedestrian level and raised gardens. It also creates exterior terraces so Google employees can be outdoors more.”

It is Pickard Chilton’s second project for Boston Properties in the Kendall Square neighborhood. The firm also designed an office building at 145 Broadway which is scheduled to open in late 2019.

Pickard Chilton, while headquartered in New Haven, is an international firm that has designed numerous corporate headquarters, high rises, hotels, academic and health-care facilities, and other commercial and residential developments. It has worked on projects around the country and world, including in Ireland, Germany and Japan.
