According to newly aggregated data, research and development activity in Connecticut accounts for 2.8% of the state’s gross domestic product.
That’s above the national average of 2.5%, but behind some neighboring states like Massachusetts at 5.8% and New Hampshire at 3%.
The figures come from a new framework released by the federal Bureau of Economic Analysis.The bureau says the framework is intended to provide a more comprehensive picture of the contribution of the R&D sector to the U.S. and state economies.
The analysis includes figures from 2012 up to 2023.
In Connecticut, as of 2023, research and development accounted for 36,600 jobs, up from 31,600 in 2012. Manufacturing accounted for 16,500 R&D jobs, while nonmanufacturing accounted for 14,100.
BEA calculates that research and development added $9.8 billion to the Connecticut economy in 2023.
