A couple behind the catering company, the Gusto Kitchen, recently launched a new fusion restaurant in New Haven.
Ladle & Loaf, at 357 Whalley Ave., features a mix of kosher and Middle Eastern offerings.
On the “ladle” side of the menu are dishes you’ll need a spoon to consume – like Harira Soup, a dish with tomatoes, chickpeas, harissa, vegetables and spices. On the “loaf” side are sandwich-style options like burgers and grilled chicken or falafel on a pita.
Ephrat and Benny Lieblich are co-owners of the new venture, which launched in November. The couple had initially hoped to open earlier last year, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed it.
Benny is the chef of the family, while Ephrat, who completed a certificate in digital media and web design training at Gateway Community College, is handling more of the business-end of the enterprise, such as office and marketing efforts.

According to the couple, they had long dreamed of opening a restaurant and saw a need for one in the area with kosher-style menu offerings. While the pandemic slowed their plans, it couldn’t stop them.
“I wanted to show our two young children that you can pave your own way and determine your own success,” Ephrat said, in an announcement. “If there’s a will there is a way, but first you must believe in yourself.”
The restaurant offers dine-in and curbside pickup and plans to expand to offer delivery too.
