New crowd-sourced photo mosaic debuts in downtown Hartford

Hartford’s first photo mosaic mural – a composition of more than 3,000 photos submitted by local residents, businesses and arts supporters – is being unveiled Thursday at 55 Pearl St., the parking garage connected to the Gold Building.

The Art Star Photo Mosaic was designed by Hartford native and artist Ellis Eschevarria, who died in January at the age of 63.

The crowd-sourced images coalesce to form a larger design that represents “the collective spirit of Hartford residents, businesses and organizations,” according to the Greater Hartford Arts Council.

“Each image within this piece represents a story, a moment, a connection — coming together to form something greater,” said Amanda Roy, interim CEO of the arts council.

The arts council said Echevarria’s artistic legacy is imbued in the 22-foot-by-22-foot mural, which both “redefines the concept of public art” and “fosters a deeper sense of community connection and support for the local arts ecosystem.”

An interactive tool on the arts council’s website allows users to zoom in on the individual images.

Support for the mural was provided by numerous individuals and organizations, including U.S. Rep. John B. Larson, the city of Hartford, Hartford HealthCare, Bradley International Airport, Eversource and Cantor Colburn.

Shelbourne Global Solutions and LAZ Parking, which own the Gold Building and the adjacent parking garage, donated the wall for the mural.
