New Canaan-based Bankwell Bank has announced plans to open a location in Brooklyn, New York on its website.
It will be the 23-year-old bank’s 10th location and expand its physical presence across state lines. It currently has about $3.2 billion in assets and employs more than 140.
In addition to Bankwell’s New Canaan headquarters, it operates two branches in Fairfield, two in Stamford and one each in Norwalk, Westport, Hamden and Darien.
Bankwell has also filed an application with the Connecticut Department of Banking seeking approval to open a “limited service branch” at 258 Elm St., in New Canaan before the close of this year.
A Bankwell representative said the designation will allow the bank to perform certain back-office functions at its existing corporate offices, which will remain closed to the public. Business and personal clients can visit the existing branch at 156 Cherry St., in New Canaan.
The Brooklyn branch will open at 557 86th St., in the Bay Ridge neighborhood.
