New Britain’s Klingberg laying off 100

New Britain’s Klingberg Family Centers is set to lay off 100 workers — some of whom could be rehired — as part of a shift in the way the state cares for children from troubled households.

The nonprofit notified Connecticut labor authorities the layoffs will occur between March 25 and April 7 as Klingberg shrinks its bed count from 68 to 26 this spring.

Mark Johnson, a Klingberg vice president, said ultimately fewer than that may lose their jobs once the Department of Children and Families launches its new format of caring for more children in foster homes in and outside Connecticut and fewer in congregate settings like Klingberg.

Klingberg employs about 400.

“Our hope is that as we add new programs, that we can take staff and add them into the new programs,” Johnson said.
